Portraits of artists, reworked by the subjects themselves — a mixed media collaboration exploring identity and authorship.

I’ve been wanting to take portraits of artists for a while, but I didn’t want them to feel like regular portraits — I wanted to find a way to get more of their personality into the image. The idea came to me to print the portraits and then ask each artist to paint over their own photo. It felt like a good way to turn it into a proper collaboration — they get to add their colours, their marks, their energy. I love that it makes each image more personal, and turns it into something that feels a bit more alive.
